Auspicious Signs

Auspicious Signs」
Author : Zhang Yu

The work “Auspicious Signs” is based on the allusion of Lao Tzu's westward journey to Han Gu Guan. According to the legend, the auspicious air was densely floating at that time, and hence Lao Tzu’s work Tao Te Ching came out. The Tao Te Ching is divided into two parts. The first part is “Taoist Scriptures”, which explains the essence of the universe, describes the confidence of the heaven and earth, and covers the efficacy of the ghost and deity. The second part is "Moralit Scriptures", which describes the philosophy of life, including the advancement and retreat of human affairs and the secret of longevity. “Unremitting learning and hard working makes the final success” embodies the profound philosophy of Lao Tzu.

"Auspicious Signs "is a great scene when Lao Tzu finishes his spiritual exercise. The portrayal of Lao Tzu painted by Mr. Zhang Yu has full forehead, white hair, ruddy complexion and sparkling eyes. The sacred figure in the picture, dressed in plain robes with leisurely expression, is riding unhurriedly forward. With Mr. Zhang Yu’s realistic and freehand brushwork, the lines are smooth and dynamic, the posture is elegant and free and easy, and the spirit is outstanding. The painter portrayed the mighty beast with the method of association of activity and inertia, so the contrast is striking and vivid. The colors are composed and elegant, with rich literati atmosphere.
